## What is a KRA PIN?

A KRA PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a unique identifier issued by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). It is required for most formal financial and legal transactions in Kenya — opening a bank account, registering a business, applying for a job, filing tax returns, and more.

Who needs a KRA PIN?

  • Every Kenyan resident earning income (employed or self-employed)
  • Business owners (sole proprietors, company directors, shareholders)
  • Anyone who wants to file a tax return
  • Landlords receiving rental income
  • How to register on iTax

Step 1: Go to the KRA iTax portal

    Visit [itax.kra.go.ke](https://itax.kra.go.ke) in your browser.

Step 2: Click "New PIN Registration"

On the iTax homepage, select "New PIN Registration" from the menu.

Step 3: Choose your taxpayer type

    Select from:

  • Individual (for employed individuals and freelancers)
  • Non-Individual (for companies, partnerships, and other entities)
  • Step 4: Fill in your personal details

    You will need:

  • National ID or Passport number
  • Date of birth
  • Full name (as on ID)
  • Physical address (county, town, postal address)
  • Email address and phone number
  • Step 5: Choose your tax obligations

Select the taxes that apply to you:

  • Income Tax — for employment income or self-employment
  • VAT — only if your annual turnover exceeds KES 5,000,000
  • PAYE — if you are an employer
  • Step 6: Submit and receive your PIN

After submission, your KRA PIN is issued immediately on screen and sent to your registered email. It begins with a letter (usually A for individuals).

    After getting your PIN

Log in to iTax using your PIN and the temporary password sent to your email. Change your password on first login.

Keep your PIN safe — you will need it for:

  • Filing all tax returns
  • Issuing and receiving invoices (ETR/VAT invoices)
  • KRA communications
